Korea Organ Bank Introduction

Organ Bank of the Jeonbuk National University Hospital was selected as a unit bank of Korea human resource in March, 2008. This bank collects tissues and blood of common cancers (stomach cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer, thyroid cancer, etc.) and noncancerous respiratory disease.

Collecting area

We collect 32,912 vials from total 2,122 patients (1,496 cancer, 626 noncancerous diseases). Blood and tissues are collected together when tumors. Blood sample is collected as 10 vials of serum, 10 vials of blood plasma, and a vial of buffy coat. Tissues is collected as 5 vials of regular tissuess and 5 vials of the tumor when quick frozen tissue, and one block each for regular tissuess and the tumor when paraffin-embedded tissue. A written consent is formed for every specimen, and clinical, radiological, and epidemiological findings are attached.

Quality assurance

Strict quality assurance is performed for good quality resources. Collecting and custody, safety and adequacy of specimens are managed for tissue resources by quality assurance. Specimen should be freezed in 30 minutes after extracting, and every required time is recorded. The safety of DNA and RNA from 3-5% specimens is evaluated. To evaluate whether enough amount of tumors are included, mirror image region is collected to examine on the HE slide. Blood should be managed in a hour at room temperature, and in 12 hours at refrigeration.

Sale in lots

504 cases were sold in lots in 2009. After an application, it is completed in a week through a resource utilization committee meeting. Specimens only evaluated appropriate are sold.
